Life, Liberty, & the Pursuit of Happiness

As Americans, we have certain unalienable rights as stated in the Declaration of Independence. These rights are the basic desires of every human being, and thank God we have a country where this is possible. These rights are: life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. These rights have been paid for by the blood of many Americans throughout the years, because there is a great price tag for freedom!

Did you know that these rights are also available to us in the spiritual realm? God desires for us to experience the following: spiritual life, spiritual liberty, and the spiritual pursuit of happiness! These freedoms have been made available to us through the blood of Jesus Christ, because He paid that great price to ensure spiritual freedom!

Life

Every person has a desire within to experience life to the fullest. We desire to have the best life possible, both now and in eternity. Since we live in a world of sin and even our own sinfulness keeps us from living life to its fullest potential, we must turn to the Author of life if we are to experience the best life possible. God is the only one that is able to give us abundant life on earth and eternal life in heaven.

John 10:10 - "The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.

John 3:16-18 - "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God."

Liberty

Sin is a powerful condition within that enslaves us to a life of deceit, misery, and destruction. Our sinful actions and vices prove that we are slaves to our own wicked condition, without the power to live a righteous and godly life. Our only hope of liberty is to be set free from sin, through the blood of Jesus Christ.

John 8:34 - "Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin."

Proverbs 5:22 - "His own iniquities shall take the wicked himself, and he shall be holden with the cords of his sins."

Romans 6:17, 18 - "But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness."

Matthew 1:21 - "And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins."

Pursuit of Happiness

Every person desires to be happy. God desires for us to be happy and joyful through a relationship with Him, experiencing the joy and blessings that come from knowing the Lord. However, we have been deceived into thinking that sin will make us happy. Sin will never make us happy, but will destroy our lives and ultimately bring death! Spiritual death is separation from God throughout eternity in a literal place called hell. Happiness is making peace with God and experiencing a satisfied life.

Romans 7:11 - "For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it slew me."

Pr 13:15 - "Good understanding giveth favour: but the way of transgressors is hard."

Ro 5:1 - "Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:"

Ps 32:1 - "Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered."

Spiritual Freedom

If you desire to have spiritual life, spiritual liberty, or the spiritual pursuit of happiness, then you must embrace the following truths.

1. I am a sinner, enslaved by my own wickedness.

Romans 3:23 - "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God."

2. I must repent (change my mind about my life of sin).

Acts 3:19 - "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord."

3. I must put my complete trust in the Lord Jesus Christ (not in my works).

Ephesians 2:8, 9 - "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast."

4. I must call upon His name for this salvation, receiving Him as Lord and Saviour.

John 1:12 - "But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name."
